NextSense | Completed 2024

Role: Project Director (Slattery)

Provision of full cost planning and cost management services for the delivery of a new national headquarters and specialist education, health and research facility at Macquarie University.

The project comprises a purpose built Centre of Excellence for NextSense, a leading Australian not-for-profit organisation supporting children with hearing and vision loss, co-locating specialist school education, early learning, clinical services, research and administration within a single integrated facility.

The development consolidates NextSense’s operations from its former North Rocks campus into a new purpose built facility within the Macquarie University precinct, strengthening collaboration with the University and broader research and healthcare ecosystem.

The scheme comprises two interconnected pavilions accommodating a specialist preschool and primary school, together with clinical, research and workplace functions, forming a highly integrated “networked” environment that enables interaction between education, healthcare and research disciplines.

The building is designed as a highly accessible and inclusive environment, incorporating advanced acoustic performance, sensory led design principles and intuitive wayfinding to support children with hearing and vision impairment, together with integration of indoor and outdoor learning environments.

Key components include immersive teaching environments, multidisciplinary clinical and research facilities, and integrated therapy and audiology services, supporting a model of care and education that brings together multiple disciplines within a single campus setting.

Delivered within an operational university campus, the project required careful staging, coordination and stakeholder management, together with integration of complex building services associated with clinical, education and research uses.

Procured under a Design & Construct model and delivered by ADCO over an approximately 24-month programme, the project targets high sustainability outcomes including a 5 Star Green Star and 4.5 Star NABERS rating.
