Powerhouse Ultimo Renewal, Sydney, NSW
Sectors: Civic, Arts & Cultural
Infrastructure NSW / Create NSW | In Progress (Completion 2027 anticipated)
Role: Project Director (Slattery)
Provision of cost planning and commercial advisory services from final business case through to construction for the renewal of the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo.
The project comprises the revitalisation and expansion of one of Australia’s most significant cultural institutions, located within the heritage listed Ultimo Power Station, repositioning the museum as a world class destination for applied arts, science and creative industries.
The redevelopment integrates adaptive reuse of the existing heritage fabric with new build elements, including conservation and restoration of the original Power Station, Turbine Hall and associated structures, together with revitalisation of the Wran Building to support contemporary exhibition use.
Key components include new and upgraded exhibition spaces designed to meet international museum standards, a reoriented primary entry and major public square connecting to The Goods Line, and a series of internal and external public domain spaces including courtyards, terraces and activated street interfaces.
The project introduces a clear and intuitive circulation strategy to improve visitor experience, together with expanded education, research and creative industry facilities supporting increased programming and community engagement.
The works present significant technical and commercial complexity associated with adaptive reuse of heritage structures, including removal and replacement of non compliant structural elements, integration of new building systems within existing fabric, and delivery within a constrained inner city site requiring careful staging and coordination.
Procured through a competitive tender process, the project is being delivered by Richard Crookes Constructions over a multi year programme.
